This page explains how to request information from the OIR, and what information is available.

Information about the OIR

Information relating to the Office of the Independent Regulator’s (OIR) operational activities, such as reportable conduct investigation oversight, is generally exempt from the Right to Information Act 2009 (Tas) (RTI Act), as per the Child and Youth Safe Organisation’s Act 2023 (Tas).

Requests may be made for information 'relating to the administration' of the OIR, under section 39 of the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Act 2023. Refer to the OIR Right to Information Policy and Procedure for further information.

Submitting a Right to Information request

Step 1: Is the information already available?

The OIR strives to be a transparent oversight body and publish as much information as we can, in the public interest. What you seek may already be available on the OIR website, including in:

If you are unable to find the information you are looking for, contact us and we may be able to help.

Step 2: Does the OIR have that information?

Consider whether the OIR has the information you are seeking, and not another government agency. For example:

• Criminal matters should be sought from the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency
• Youth justice records should be sought from the Department for Education, Children and Young People

Step 3: Submit an application

Step 4: Pay the fee

The fee for submitting an RTI application is currently $46.75, in accordance with the RTI Act.

The fee can be waived in some circumstances, such as if you are a Health Care Card holder or can demonstrate the information is of public benefit.

If the OIR deny your application, you may be able to seek a review of our decision by the Ombudsman Tasmania.
